Fibres Sustana and Société VIA join forces to recycle locally

Sustana Fibers and Société VIA join forces for local recycling of multilayer containers, promoting the circular economy and reducing the ecological footprint. An unprecedented partnership that paves the way for new opportunities in Quebec's recycling sector.

Lévis, the 8th April 2021 – Sustana Fibers, specialized in the manufacture of premium-quality white recycled fibers from recycled content, is pleased to announce its new partnership with Société VIA, an adapted enterprise specializing in the sorting and recovery of recyclable materials. The multi-layered food and beverage containers recovered are then recycled locally thanks to the Fibres Sustana initiative. A first for a partnership of this type and scope!

CIRCULAR ECONOMY AT THE FOREFRONT

With decreasing quantities of paper available for recycling, the search for alternative fibers, such as multi-layer board, was a natural route for Sustana Fibers, even before the COVID-19 pandemic.

This new partnership, with local sourcing, enables the company to reduce its ecological footprint and promote the Quebec market. These products, which have been exported for years, represent a significant saving in transport costs and, by the same token, in greenhouse gas emissions.

A WINNING DEAL

In this period of transformation in the recycling industry, price volatility is a significant issue for sorting centers like Société VIA. The development of an agreement of this type is therefore welcomed, since it also ensures a stable price for these materials, which will be recycled.

“Fibres Sustana is a local company that has managed to transform and reinvent itself. We’re proud to be able to work with them to promote the circular economy. Over the past few years, we have modernized our sorting centers, enabling us to increase our production capacity, in addition to improving the capture rate and quality of these materials. We are confident that these innovations will benefit this partnership,” says Jean-Sébastien Daigle, President and CEO of Société VIA.

Sustana Fibers hopes to use this first partnership to demonstrate that it is a cost-effective and attractive source of supply, and to attract the attention of other sorting centers across Quebec. The company is currently evaluating an expansion project that would enable it to recycle 15,000 tonnes per year, compared with the current 4,000 tonnes.

“The fibers contained in multilayer containers are a renewable resource with great potential for recovery. At Sustana Fibers, we value this alternative fiber source, and our supply agreement with Société VIA demonstrates our commitment to improving the recycling of these containers in Quebec, and thus contributing to the sustainable development of our economy,” says Jean-Sébastien Foisy, Vice-President of Operations at Sustana Fibers.
